Sex Trafficking and Gangs in San Diego:

Research results from two years of in-depth interviews with traffickers, focus groups in area high schools, law enforcement data and life histories collected from survivors

Dr. Ami Carpenter, University of San Diego,

PLNU’s Center for Justice and Reconciliation Director Dr. Jamie Gates

and their research assistants

Come learn the results of what Drs. Carpenter and Gates have learned from gathering information for two years from San Diego County traffickers, survivors, social service agency staff, public high school faculty/staff and from law enforcement.   News reports abound in recent months on the surprising level of modern slavery happening in the United States and here in San Diego in particular.  Two indictments by the US Attorney’s office in 2014 uncovered over 160 victims of sex trafficking; many of these child victims were recruited at local middle and high schools.  These federal indictments charged 46 alleged gang members of sex trafficking operations that stretched across the United States.  While law enforcement is growing its capacity to engage this crime, the rest of San Diego has been growing in its awareness and action.   Increasingly sophisticated research is needed to inform and increasingly sophisticated response to this social evil and all of its accompanying temptations.
