Call To Actions Presentation on Human Trafficking

February 22, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

We are delighted that the San Diego Call to Action chapter (and all our friends) will have the opportunity to hear an educational presentation on human trafficking by Sr. Jean Schafer, SDS, a foremost national and international advocate and educator against human trafficking. She is a member of the international Congregation of the Sisters of the Divine Savior (“Salvadoran Sisters”). During her 12 years (1989-2002) as leader of its 1300 professed members in 27 countries on 5 continents, the congregation took on the plight of enslaved women and children as part of its global ministries.

Following her leadership term Sr. Jean moved to California and focused her attention on educating people about human trafficking. In 2003 she began publishing the monthly e-newsletter STOP TRAFFICKING, which has been in publication for 11 years and can be seen at www.stopenslavement.org. This newsletter is a ready reference source of educational materials with a wide range of insights into the complex problem of trafficking. Since 2008 Sr. Jean and Sr. Sheila Novak, SDS have been co-directors of SDS Hope House, a safe house in North County that provides shelter and counseling services to victims of human trafficking.

Jean is an active member of a number of local anti-human trafficking coalitions, including the Southern Partners for Global Justice, the North San Diego County Human Trafficking Collaborative, and the Victim Services Sub-Committee of the San Diego Board of Supervisors Human Trafficking Advisory Council.
